Taizé in Prague

20. listopadu 2014

The next European Meeting of Young People will be held in the city and region of Prague, from 29 December 2014 to 2 January 2015. The Taizé Community is preparing the meeting at the invitation of the Czech Bishops’ Conference and the Ecumenical Council of Churches in the Czech Republic. It will bring together 20-25 thousand young adults for the next step of the “pilgrimage of trust on earth” initiated by Brother Roger at the end of the 1970s. Those attending do not intend to form any particular movement but they seek paths of trust through deepening their inner life and by building up solidarity across the divisions in our societies. The gatherings have taken place all around Europe and this year Prague, the city of a thousand towers and steeples in the heart of Europe, will offer warm hospitality through its cultural treasures and spiritual heritage.

The Taizé Community was founded in 1940 and is made up of about 100 brothers from over 30 countries. They come from various Christian denominations and they seek to be a sign of reconciliation in often divided nations and cultures. The Community lives entirely by their own work without receiving any gifts. They are perhaps best known for their simple and inclusive worship.

There are several ways in which people can participate. In addition to the Young People who will be attending, anyone who lives in Prague and the surrounding areas is welcome to participate in the various events free of charge regardless of their age. The programme will include sharing of ideas and experiences in small groups, common prayer, and workshops on several different themes. Morning activities will be in local districts. In the afternoon people will be invited to gather in churches in the city centre. In the evenings activities will be held in Letňany at PVA EXPO PRAHA.

Since so many Young People will be coming to Prague there is a tremendous need for housing and hospitality. The Taizé community is actively working with Preparation Teams throughout the region of Prague. Accommodation is being sought in the homes of local inhabitants. In addition to individuals, local churches are invited to provide accommodation and hospitality. If you are interested in providing hospitality or have any questions please contact info@taizepraha.cz You can also find more information at the website: www.taizipraha.cz.
