Statement of the Synodal Council of the ECCB regarding the death of Václav Havel, President of the C

19. prosince 2011

We feel pain and loss over the death of Václav Havel. Pain that a man has departed who was close to our thinking though never officially in any Christian Church. His attitude and much of his discourse resonated with the gospel. Václav Havel respected Him who is above us. He believed that human life will be evaluated on its end, he knew that he lived from the perspective of eternity. This gave him the strength to fight for truth and love.

We are grateful to God for his life. And we see his death as a loss for ourselves and for the society in which we live. We feel that Vaclav Havel's departure from us weakens the forces in our society and the world that struggle for justice, that urge responsibility for one's neighbor, that strive for truth and that have concern for the needy and oppressed. We realize that we must build on many of these emphases, and therefore we ask God, that through us He would bring these values into our lives, churches and society.
